Location and Character

Eller lies in Stadtbezirk 4, east of the city centre and south of Lierenfeld. With around 35,000 residents it is one of Düsseldorf's larger districts. The neighbourhood has a pronounced identity: a busy main shopping street, a diverse population and a genuine local community spirit that dispels any notion of faceless suburban life. Eller is not a scene district, but it is a lively urban quarter with real neighbourhood bonds.

History and Development

Eller was an independent municipality east of Düsseldorf until its incorporation in 1909. Traces of that independent history are still visible today: a grown village core, its own high street and a communal cohesion rarely found in newer city districts. During the 20th century the population grew significantly as people arrived from other German regions and from abroad.

Living and Quality of Life

Eller offers affordable housing with solid everyday infrastructure. Various housing formats – from smaller period flats to newer multi-family buildings – are available. Ellerstrasse and Vennhauser Allee are the main retail axes. Schools, kindergartens and health facilities are present in adequate numbers.

Getting Around

U-Bahn stops Eller Mitte and Vennhauser Allee (lines U75, U76) connect the district to the Hauptbahnhof in roughly 20 minutes. Bus routes fill remaining gaps. Cycling is well suited for journeys within Eller and to neighbouring districts.

Green Spaces and Leisure

Eller Forst, a forested area east of the neighbourhood, is the main green recreation space. Several parks and planted squares are distributed through the district. Gastronomy reflects its diverse population: international cuisines, traditional pubs and modern cafés coexist. Weekly markets at Ellerplatz are a social focal point.

For Visitors and Travellers

Eller offers visitors an authentic immersion in everyday Düsseldorf. Those wishing to stay affordably and experience city life without tourist staging will find a good match here. The Eller Forst invites cycling and walking. The U-Bahn makes the Altstadt reachable in about 20 minutes.
