Heerdt lies in Stadtbezirk 10, west of the Rhine between Lörick to the north and Niederkassel to the east. The neighbourhood offers what many seek in a large city: calm, greenery and still good accessibility. Its direct Rhine position and connection via the Rheinkniebrücke to the inner city make Heerdt an attractive left-bank alternative for those not wanting the bustle of the eastern inner-city districts on the doorstep.
History and Development
Heerdt was until well into the 20th century an independent village on the left bank of the Rhine, whose residents were mainly engaged in agriculture and fishing. Incorporation into Düsseldorf and the connections provided by bridges and public transport gradually transformed it into a middle-class residential area. Compared to Oberkassel, which underwent stronger gentrification, Heerdt remained more down-to-earth and affordable.
Living and Quality of Life
Rents in Heerdt sit below those in Oberkassel and Niederkassel. Period buildings and post-war stock define the picture. Local supply is reliable: along Heerdter Landstrasse and the village centre there are supermarkets, bakeries, cafés and everyday services. Families and quietness-oriented professionals are the core residents.
Getting Around
Trams and bus lines (lines 70, 74, 76 via Rheinkniebrücke) connect Heerdt to the Düsseldorf inner city in roughly 15–20 minutes. The bridge is equally usable by cyclists, making left-bank living and right-bank employment easily combinable.

The Rhine is a short walk from Heerdt; the Rhine meadows offer generous open space. Local parks and green pathways through the neighbourhood supplement the offer. The Heerdter See (lake) is a pleasant local recreation destination within the district.

Heerdt offers city visitors a calm accommodation alternative with good connections to the Altstadt across the Rhine. Cycling to the opposite Altstadt bank and back makes a pleasant excursion. The Rhine bank between Heerdt and Lörick is picturesque and uncrowded.
