Location and Character

Oberkassel sits on the left bank of the Rhine, linked to the inner city by the Oberkasseler Brücke and the Rheinkniebrücke. By bike, the Altstadt is two minutes away – a fact that makes Oberkassel a dream address for many. The neighbourhood combines upscale living with a genuine neighbourhood feel: Luegallee is the district's main artery, flanked by boutiques, cafés, restaurants and a Saturday market that draws residents from across Düsseldorf.

History and Development

Oberkassel was laid out in the late 19th century as a villa and bourgeois residential quarter on the Rhine's western bank. After wartime damage it was rebuilt in the 1950s and 60s. Since the 1980s the neighbourhood has evolved from a conventional middle-class address into one of Düsseldorf's most coveted districts: expats, creative-industry workers and young families moved in, and the gastronomic scene flourished (source: Stadtarchiv Düsseldorf, Statistikamt NRW).

Living and Quality of Life

Oberkassel is expensive, but modestly so compared to the Altstadt or the area around Königsallee. Post-war apartment buildings, renovated Wilhelminian townhouses and newer constructions provide a varied supply. Families appreciate the quiet side streets, good schools and proximity to the Rhine. For commuters into the inner city there is scarcely a better left-bank residential location.

Getting Around

Several tram and bus routes connect Oberkassel to the inner city. Tram lines 704 and 709 cross the bridges directly into the Stadtmitte. For many residents the fastest option is the bicycle: the Hauptbahnhof is ten minutes away. Cars are present in Oberkassel, but far from obligatory – parking on the busier streets can be tight.

Green Spaces and Leisure

Direct access to the Rhine meadows is Oberkassel's green asset. The riverside park on the left bank offers generous lawns, play areas and river views. Luegallee with its mature horse-chestnut trees is one of Düsseldorf's most beautiful boulevard streets. The Saturday market is a social institution that brings the neighbourhood together. Gastronomically the offer ranges from relaxed bistros to some of Düsseldorf's best wine bars.

For Visitors and Travellers

Oberkassel is a rewarding destination beyond the standard tourist routes. Luegallee with its restaurants and cafés is at its best on evenings and weekends. From the Oberkasseler Brücke there is a spectacular view of the Düsseldorf skyline with the Rhine Tower and Medienhafen. As a base for visitors, Oberkassel is near-ideal: quiet, yet with rapid access to the Altstadt, the Medienhafen and the whole inner city. The Rhine meadows invite long summer evenings by the water.
