Location and Character

Unterbilk lies between the Rhine to the west, Bilk to the east and Friedrichstadt to the north. Immediately to the north the Medienhafen (Media Harbour) begins – the former industrial dock basin transformed since the 1990s into one of Germany's best-known architecture and creative-industry districts. That proximity shapes Unterbilk: people working in media or wanting to be close to the creative scene tend to settle here.

History and Development

For decades Unterbilk was a classic port workers' neighbourhood, defined by modest housing, small craft businesses and life along the Rhine. With the transformation of the adjacent commercial harbour into the Medienhafen from the 1990s, the character shifted noticeably. Creative workers, media professionals and young professionals moved in; original building stock mixed with new uses. Today the neighbourhood is well into an advanced stage of evolution (source: Stadtentwicklungsplan Düsseldorf).

Living and Quality of Life

Unterbilk still offers a varied housing mix: more affordable period flats alongside upgraded lofts, craft workshops alongside boutiques. Rents have risen but remain below those of the adjacent Altstadt. Proximity to the Rhine, the Altstadt and the Medienhafen makes it attractive for those wanting a central address without the maximum price. Retail and gastronomy are growing, though the offer is currently more heterogeneous than in Bilk or the Altstadt.

Getting Around

U-Bahn stop Heinrich-Heine-Allee lies a short walk to the north. Several bus lines serve Berger Allee and adjacent streets. Cycling is the fastest way into the Altstadt (roughly 5 minutes) or to the Hauptbahnhof (roughly 10 minutes). The Rhine waterfront road offers a direct cycling path along the river.

Green Spaces and Leisure

The Rhine bank is reachable on foot and provides views across to the Medienhafen with its spectacular buildings by Frank Gehry (Neuer Zollhof), David Chipperfield and other international architects. A walk along the harbour basin combines architecture, river views and gastronomy within a small area. The neighbourhood's own going-out scene is modest but growing; the Altstadt is only a short distance away.

For Visitors and Travellers

The Medienhafen is one of the most architecturally interesting destinations in all of NRW and is reachable on foot from Unterbilk. The three Gehry buildings of Neuer Zollhof are a highlight for architecture enthusiasts. Those dining in the Medienhafen and then continuing to the Altstadt have a walkable connection through Unterbilk. For overnight visitors, the neighbourhood provides an alternative to expensive inner-city hotels – the charm of a neighbourhood in transition is included.
