Location and Character
Wittlaer lies in Stadtbezirk 9, north of Kaiserswerth and only a few kilometres from the city boundary with Duisburg. The neighbourhood is one of Düsseldorf's most northerly and has a pronounced village character: narrow lanes, old farmsteads, expansive Rhine meadows and a tranquillity that seems incompatible with belonging to a major city. For many, Wittlaer is a genuine insider's secret.
History and Development
Wittlaer was an independent municipality on the Lower Rhine before its incorporation. Rhine proximity and an agricultural character shaped the village over centuries. Historic farmsteads and the typical Lower Rhine architectural style remain recognisable. Incorporation into Düsseldorf brought infrastructure improvements without fundamentally altering the local character.
Living and Quality of Life
Few people live in Wittlaer – the neighbourhood is small with limited residential capacity. Detached houses and small older buildings dominate. Calm is absolute, infrastructure minimal. The neighbourhood is ideal for those with a car and a strong desire for a peaceful, nature-adjacent way of life.
Getting Around
Wittlaer is connected to the rest of Düsseldorf via bus services and the S-Bahn at Kaiserswerth. A car is indispensable for most daily journeys. Cycling paths along the Rhine connect southward to Kaiserswerth.
Green Spaces and Leisure
Rhine meadows, natural riverbanks and the wide Lower Rhine landscape are the attractions. Kayaking, fishing, birdwatching and extended walks are part of everyday leisure. The neighbourhood is so calm it has become a popular excursion destination for Düsseldorf city dwellers wanting to leave noise behind.
For Visitors and Travellers
