Location and Character

Benrath lies in Düsseldorf's southernmost Stadtbezirk 7, directly on the Rhine. The district has a pronounced independent identity: a historic village core, a lively district centre along the main street and the renowned Schloss Benrath as its architectural and cultural landmark. Benrath is not the Düsseldorf inner city – but it is equally not a featureless suburb. It has character.

History and Development

Benrath was first documented in the medieval period as a small Rhine-meadow village. The pivotal moment came with the construction of Schloss Benrath: the electoral summer palace built for Elector Karl Theodor (the same namesake as Carlstadt in central Düsseldorf) between 1755 and 1773 to designs by the architect Nicolas de Pigage is one of the most significant Baroque residential complexes on the Lower Rhine (source: Kulturamt Düsseldorf). Benrath was incorporated into Düsseldorf in 1975.

Living and Quality of Life

Benrath offers a lively district centre with its own charm. Benrather Hauptstrasse is a well-frequented shopping street; supermarkets, restaurants, cafés and service businesses line up along it. Housing prices sit below the Düsseldorf city average but above those in poorer outlying areas. Families, commuters and older residents choose Benrath for its good infrastructure and calmer atmosphere compared to the high-price inner city.

Getting Around

Düsseldorf-Benrath station is an important S-Bahn hub: direct connections to Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof (roughly 20 minutes) and onwards towards Cologne and Duisburg. Bus routes supplement coverage. The Rhine bank is reachable on foot. An A46 motorway junction is a short distance away.

Green Spaces and Leisure

Schlosspark Benrath is the district's green centrepiece – a large garden complex in the 18th-century French style. The park is open to the public and hosts walks, concerts and outdoor events. The Rhine at Benrath is wide and calm; the riverside promenade invites relaxed strolling and river views. The palace itself now houses a museum of Rococo architecture and the history of the electorate.

For Visitors and Travellers

Schloss Benrath is one of the most important cultural monuments in the region and a worthwhile destination for admirers of Baroque architecture and garden art. Combining a palace visit with a park stroll and a browse of Benrather Hauptstrasse makes an enjoyable day excursion to or from Düsseldorf. From Cologne, Benrath is reachable by rail in roughly 45 minutes. For visitors wanting to stay quietly and affordably while exploring both Düsseldorf and the wider Rhineland, Benrath is a logistically sound base.
