Garath lies in the southernmost part of Düsseldorf in Stadtbezirk 7, bordering Hellerhof and Hassels. The neighbourhood is a planned new town from the 1960s and 70s – architecturally characterised by post-war modernist principles of strip buildings, tower blocks and an expansive green framework. Garath today has its own independent infrastructure, affordable rents and a diverse community.

Garath was deliberately built from scratch in the 1960s on open land – an undertaking executed with a consistency rarely found elsewhere in Düsseldorf. The first generation of residents moved into modern apartments considered forward-looking for their time. U-Bahn line U74 connects Garath directly to Düsseldorf's inner city; the Hauptbahnhof is roughly 25–30 minutes away. Several bus stops supplement coverage. A car increases daily flexibility but is not strictly necessary.

Garath offers unusually extensive green spaces for a major city: large parks, play areas and planted zones between residential blocks are characteristic of its planned structure. Transitions to the southern open countryside and the Rhine are possible. Leisure infrastructure in the neighbourhood includes sports halls, a swimming pool and club activities.
